Hanger:

  • A closed structure to hold aircraft or spacecraft in protective storage is termed as hangars.
  • The main purpose of a hangar is to provide an enclosure for shelter or housing and repairing of the aircraft.
  • Following are the various uses of hangars:
  1. It protects aircraft from weather
  2. It protects aircraft from direct sunlight
  3. It is used for maintenance, repair, manufacture, assembly and storage of aircrafts on airfields.
  • Most hangars are built in metal but other materials such as wood and concrete are also used.
  • It can be constructed in steel framework covered with the galvanized iron sheets. Service hangars are also provided for storage of spare parts required for repair with machine shops. Size of a hangar depends upon the size of aircraft and its turning radius.

Types of Hangars

There are mainly two types of hangars namely:

(i) T-hangars

(ii) Nose hangars
