It is observed that at present tracks, are mostly laid with flat-footed rails. Give reasons for this preference in relation to other types of rail section.

Rails are the rolled steel structure laid end to end in two parallel lines over the sleepers to form a railway track is called as rails.

Flat footed rail is one of the type of rails.

Flat footed rails:-

  1. In these rail sections, their foot is rolled to flat. These types of rails are commonly used in India as they are strong and stiff.
  2. It has got higher lateral and vertical strength.
  3. These types of rails does not requires chairs to fix them in position. They are simple and easy in fixing but for better results steel bearing plates are provided in between flat footed rails and wooden sleepers as under heavy loads. These rails may sink into sleeper.
  4. It distributes load properly over the sleepers and thus increases life of sleepers.
  5. Therefore, flat footed rail is mostly used.
