  1. Reservoir sedimentation is filling of the reservoir with sediment or slit carried into the reservoir by streams.
  2. Due to physical weathering of the surface in the catchment area, the process of erosion starts. This loose material is transported from the source region to the down-stream areas of the catchment.
  3. The carrying capacity of the stream depends upon the velocity of the stream and the amount of surface run-off i.e. if surface run-off is more, than more load would be carried in the dam stream areas of the catchment.
  4. The amount of sediments i.e. load, in the streams, depends on following factors.
  • Nature of soil in the catchment
  • The topography area
  • Vegetation cover
  • Intensity of rainfall

The methods to control sedimentation are as follows:

  1. Proper selection of reservoir site.
  2. Control of sediment inflow.
  3. Proper designing and reservoir planning.
  4. Control of sediment deposit.
  5. Removal of sediment deposit.
  6. Erosion control in catchment area.
