Data converters include devices that perform the forward operation of analog-to-digital conversion in which analog signals are converted into strings of digital data. They also include devices that perform the reverse process; that is, digital-to-analog conversion, in which digital data are used to reconstruct the original analog signals. The specifications of data converters can be grouped into:

• Specifications related to input
• Specifications related to internal structure
• Specifications related to output

Because the two operations of ADC and DAC are complementary, the set of specifi-cations describing the input for one of them is equivalent to the set of specifications describing the output of the other and vice versa. Table summarizes the most important specifications of ADCs and DACs.
