Spontaneous Emission Stimulated Emission
1) When an atom in an excited state makes a transition into ground state by emission of photon, without any external stimulus, it’s called spontaneous emission. 1) When an atom in an higher energy state is forced by a photon to make a transition into ground state resulting into emission of another photon is called stimulated emission.
2) There is no intermediate energy state in which atom exist. 2) Atom is present in a metastable state prior to the emission.
3) The emitted photons have random phases, directions and polarization states. 3) The emitted photons have same phase, direction and polarization state as that of stimulating photon.
