  • The term ‘jargon’ refers to specialized vocabulary that people belonging to a professional group might use.

  • It should be used only when communicating with people belonging to the same profession.

  • When used with a layperson, it might cause confusion and misunderstanding.

  • Jargon sometimes is wrongly confused with slang and people often take it in the same sense but a difference is always there.

  • The use of jargon becomes essential in prose or verse or some technical pieces of writing when the writer intends to convey something only to the readers who are aware of these terms. Therefore, jargon was taken in early times as a trade language or as a language of a specific profession, as it is somewhat unintelligible for other people who do not belong to that particular profession.

  • The French word is believed to have been derived from the Latin gaggire, meaning "to chatter", which was used to describe something in which the speaker did not understand.

  • Overuse of technical jargon and scientific terms can make it difficult for the people to understand the thoughts of the speaker.

  • Difficult terms and abstruse words can be responsible for breakdown in communication.

  • Some of the examples of jargon are as follows:

    • BTW - By the way

    • CYA - See you around

    • FAQ - Frequently asked questions

    • HTH - Hope this helps

    • MOTD - Message of the day
