I would use written communication for completing the lease of my apartment rather than oral communication.

A lease is a contractual arrangement calling for the lessee (user) to pay the lesser (owner) for use of an asset.

So looking at contractual thing, anyone would like to save this record with himself/herself for future purpose as this contract will serve as legal evidence of payment in future. As we cannot save any kind of evidence with oral communication.
