  1. The line of balance technique is used to plan the production of repetitive construction units. The basis of the technique is to find the required resources for each stage or operation so that the following stages are not interfered with and the target output can be achieved
  2. Line of Balance is a management control process for collecting, measuring and presenting facts relating to time, cost and accomplishment- all measured against a specific plan. It shows the process, status, background, timing and phasing of the project activities, thus providing management with measuring tools that help:
    • Comparing actual progress with a formal objective plan
    • Forecasting future performance.
  3. There are basically two methods for producing a line of balance programme:
    • Using optimum gang sizes and calculating the completion date
    • Using a set completion time and variable gang sizes.
  4. Progress can be monitored and recorded on the chart by coloring activities as they are completed or by following progress by means of horizontal lines for each unit completed.
