  • This comprehensive piece of legislation was passed under article-252 of the constitution mainly with the object of prevention and control of water pollution.

  • The act contemplates establishment of one central board for prevention and control of water pollution and similar boards at state level.

  • The penalties against the pollutant vary from rigorous imprisonment for 6 months to 6 years.

  • Salient features are:

    • It is social welfare legislation, enacted for the purpose of prevention of pollution of water and for maintaining or restoring wholesomeness.

    • This is an act to provide for the prevention and control of water pollution and maintaining the wholesomeness of water, for the establishment with a view to carrying out the purpose of boards for prevention and control of water pollution.

    • Pollution means such contamination of water or such alteration of the physical, chemical or biological properties of water which may likely to create a nuisance or render such water harmful or injurious to public health, domestic, commercial etc , also harmful to floura and fauna.
