Refrigeration may be defined as the process of transporting heat from one location to another under controlled conditions. The work for the system can be driven by mechanical, electrical, heat, magnetic, laser or other means.

Applications in:

i. Food processing - transporting temperature- sensitive foodstuffs; cold storages; large storage warehouses; development of sushi/sashimi industry in Japan

ii. Household - Air conditioning private homes, refrigerators

iii. Industrial sector- Liquefy gases like oxygen, nitrogen, methane; in compressed air purification; in oil refineries and chemical plants to maintain certain processes; pharmaceutical industry; to temper steel and cutlery.
