Good housekeeping involves every phase of industrial operation and should apply throughout the entire premises- indoor as well as outdoor.
It is more than mere cleanliness. It requires orderly conditions, the avoidance of congestion and attention to detail as an orderly layout of the whole work place, the making of aisles, adequate storage arrangement and suitable provision for cleaning and maintenance.
The following are the elements of good housekeeping campaign that need attention:
Aisles: They should be wide enough for traffic movement marked off by floor lines from work position and storage area.
Space: Sufficient space for the individual to work should be available.
Storage: Adequate and convenient space for materials and tools.
Material handling: Layout planned for material flow with efficient methods and equipments.
Ventilation: Good general ventilation plus local exhaust ventilation to remove air contaminants.
Lightings: Well distributed artificial lights and effective use of available day light.
Waste removal facilities: Adequate facilities to prevent congestion and disorder.
