  • The primary function of the Oxygen sensor or O2 sensor is to aid in the smooth operation of engine by detecting suitable air to fuel ratio and thereby ensuring fuel efficiency.
  • It is positioned in the exhaust pipe of most cars manufactured after 1980.
  • It senses rich or lean fuel mixtures and measures the amount of unburned oxygen present in exhaust.
  • This information is then sent to the engine’s computer in the form of voltages which in turn adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine.
  • Oxygen sensor not only helps in ensuring efficient fuel consumption but also in emitting lowest level of pollution like unburned fuel in case of rich mixtures and nitrogen oxide pollutants in case of lean mixtures. Hence this sensor plays a vital role in emissions control system.
