Steel is used in majority of the cases as it is the cheapest and it is easy stamped out to form various shapes. Alloying elements are added to improve the ability to be formed into deeper depressions without wrinkling or tearing in the manufacturing process.
Aluminum is used by some of the manufacturers because of its formability, lightness and anti-rust capabilities even though it has lesser stiffer and rigidity than steel.
Thermoplastics are used quite often for components like boot covers, grills etc., whereas thermosetting plastics esp. glass reinforced plastics like fibre glass are being used for body shells.
The latest type of plastic used for bodywork is one reinforced by carbon fibre, which is found to be stronger than steel. The only disadvantage being high cost.
Toughed or tempered glass is used for automobile side window glass and back door glass. It is also used as windscreens in some automobiles.
Laminated glass is generally used for windscreens.
