  1. During positive half cycle of ac input supply (0 to π), terminal A is positive with respect to B. Therefore diode D is forward biased and current flows through the load. This will make the load voltage positive and almost equal to the instaneous supply voltage.

  2. During negative half cycle of ac input supply (π to 2π), terminal B is positive with respect to A. Therefore diode D is reverse biased and it acts as an open switch. The load is disconnected from the source load current and load voltage are zero.
