Circuit configuration: An approximate of 200V AC supply is given to the circuit.
It uses a step down transformer.
R is the load resistance.
Vs is the secondary voltage.
Let iL be the current flowing through the secondary loop.
Working: During the positive half of the cycle of ac supply, terminal A is positive w.r.t B. The diode PN is forward biased and current flows through the load. As the diode starts conducting, the secondary voltage appears almost as it is across the load resistance.
Similarly, during the negative half of the cycle of ac supply, terminal B is positive w.r.t A. The diode PN is reverse biased, offers a very high resistance. It is replaced by an open circuit switch. Hence, there is no load at the secondary terminal and current does not flow through the load.
Hence, it is called as Half wave rectifier. The output contains AC as well as DC components.
