Sr.No. Ionic polarization Orientational polarization
Ionic polarization describes the net effect of changing the distance between neighbouring ions in an ionic crystal like NaCl (or in crystals with some ionic component like SiO2) by the electric field. Orientation polarization results from minimizing the free enthalpy of an ensemble of (molecular) dipoles that can move and rotate freely
Polarization is linked to bonding strength, i.e. Young's modulus Y Polarization is not linked to bonding strength, i.e. Young's modulus Y
The total dipole moment is not the vector sum of the individual dipole moments. The total dipole moment is the vector sum of the individual dipole moments.
E.g.NaCl, SiO2 E.g. polar liquids.
