The reasons why soft magnetic materials are used in the core of transformers are as follows:-

  • Transformers deal with Alternating Currents.

  • Thus, the core of the transformers undergoes cyclic magnetization and demagnetization.

  • As a result, Hysteresis and Eddy current losses are bound to take place.

  • Soft magnetic materials have comparatively smaller area enclosed by the Hysteresis loop.

  • As a result, the Hysteresis losses are low.

  • Also the Eddy current loss for the soft magnetic materials is low.

  • The magnetic permeability is also high.

Thus, Soft Magnetic materials are preferred as the material for the cores of the transformers.
